Portrait-Bust of a Female Figure

JE 44672 Cairo Antiquities Museum

Material: Marble
Size: Height 61 cm
Location: Kom Abu Billo (Terenuthis)
Period: Roman Period (140-150 AD)

This is a bust of a mature woman of high social standing. Note her elaborate hairstyle, rendered through simple incised geometric lines. This bust was at once time identified with the mother of Marcus Aurelius, but this is no longer accepted by scholars. However, the hairstyle and iconography of the figure allow it to be dated to within a ten year period.
