Ramesses II at the Siege of Dharpur
Photographer: James Putnam
Title: Ramesses II at the Siege of Dharpur
Description: Reconstruction painting from a relief of Ramesses II at the siege of Dharpur carved on the inner south wall of the Hypostyle Hall in the Ramesseum. As usual in Egyptian art, the king is shown at huge scale in relation to everyone else. He tirelessly fires his arrows from his charging chariot, guiding the horses by the reins tied around his waist. The Hittite enemy chariotry is thrown into confusion, their citadel attacked with scaling ladders and the defenders plunge from the battlements as they put up a useless resistance. The long hieroglyphic inscription extols, as usual, the great valor of the king, aided by the god Amun.
