Waterwheels at Fayoum

The Fayoum is a large and extremely fertile depression in Egypt's Western Desert, some 90 kilometers southwest of Cairo. The region is both rich in history and outstanding in natural beauty. It's farmland is watered by the region's landmark waterwheels. Waterwheels are a feature of the Fayoum and a source of pride to the local population. They are made of local wood and certain families specialize in making them.
