A priest walks through one of the most ancient Coptic monasteries in the world, in Wadi el-Natrun in the Egyptian desert, halfway between Cairo and Alexandria. Some of the first Coptic monks found shelter and protection here. In ancient times defensive measures were necessary, so buildings assumed fortress-like features.
