The Geographical Society

The Geographical Society building contains a library (mostly with works in French), a cartographic (map making) collection, along with a series of relief maps of Egypt. There is also an ethnographic museum (anthropological study of the origins and characteristics of racial and cultural groups) with a collection of common, everyday artifacts of 19th century Egypt. Founded by Ismail, the Society at first acted as a staging point for European explorers who came to search for the sources of the Nile. Later, the Society financed a number of geographers of Egypt.
