THE LATEST ISSUE OF 'EEF NEWS'
EEF NEWS is an email newsletter posted on the EEF mailinglist. It appears every week, on Thursday. Below you'll find the website version, which is also renewed every Thursday evening.
For subscription to the EEF, a moderated scholarly mailinglist on Egyptology, see http://welcome.to/EEF or the original link at the end of this page. The EEF list also has a daily (lumped) digest option and a weekly (sorted) digest option, and has monthly archives (sorted by topic). There is no seperate subscription list for the NEWS alone, so if you are less interested in following debates, you may get the News by either visiting this website on Friday or by subscribing to the Weekly EEF Digest (meaning you'll get the NEWS on Thursday and one easily deleted Digest on Sunday).
Major news items which are of obvious interest for the list as a whole (like announcements of discoveries and excavation reports) are best posted directly on EEF; smaller news bits (like announcements of lectures, website updates/reviews, email address changes etc.) are good candidates for being bundled in EEF NEWS.

Neurology in ancient faces, in: Journal of Neurology, Neurosurgery &
Psychiatry [JNNP], vol. 70, pp. 524-529, 2001
"Clinical paleoneurology is almost non-existent, but recognition of
neurological diseases in ancient people might be possible by
scrutinising portraits apparently representing people as they appeared
in life. ... About 200 mummy portraits painted in colour at the beginning
of the first millennium were examined. ... Two patients were found with
progressive facial hemiatrophy (Parry-Romberg syndrome), three with
deviations of the visual axes (tropia) and one with oval pupils (corectopia).
... Clinical paleoneurology is possible in the absence of a living nervous system.
The patients probably had focal epilepsy, hemiplegic migraine, and autonomic nervous system dysfunction.

* Volume 3 of the CD-ROM series Egyptian Treasures in Europe will be
available as from March 13, 2001.
It presents 1,500 Egyptian objects from the National Museum of Ireland, Dublin.
The CD-ROM has seven different language modules
(Dutch, English, French, German, Italian, Portuguese, and Spanish. Each object is illustrated by colour
images, which can be enlarged. Some objects can be rotated. There are
panoramic views (QTVR) of several archaeological sites and of the main room
of the museum. A glossary of about 400 entries explains Egyptian words and
concepts, illustrated with pictures and line drawings. Scholarly information
about gods, kings, dynasties, archaeological sites, etc. is given in a user-friendly
way. A guided tour presents fifteen objects with a spoken commentary. The
texts on many objects are shown in hieroglyphs, transliteration and translation.
Texts and hieroglyphs can be printed. An advanced mode opens up the full
database, offering detailed scholarly information to professionals and amateurs
alike. Here, more complex queries can be made by using any of the terms of the
Multilingual Egyptological Thesaurus.
