The Cataract Pyramids Hotel

By Jimmy Dunn

The walls shimmer with cascading water, and provide a cool feeling on a hot Egyptian summer day. This is the lobby of the relatively new Cataract Pyramids hotel in Giza. It sparkles with brass fixtures and fountains, reminding you that this is one of any number of recent five star additions to Cairo.  It bills itself as the first urban resort hotel in Egypt, but that is something of a stretch considering hotels such as the Mena House. Yet this is another huge hotel complex, a growing breed in Egypt, and it does have a variety of entertainment and recreational facilities.

With 400 rooms the Cataract is indeed a super hotel, including 11 restaurants, a business center and a conference room that seats up to 1,000 people. Located in Giza, it is but a short trip to the Pyramids and other attractions in that area. This makes it great for tour groups where the bus picks everyone up each day, but it is a long walk indeed to downtown Cairo, the stores and sightseeing attractions. Basically, like other hotels in Giza, while close to the Pyramids, it is not all together suitable for the independent traveler.

Rooms have all the modern amenities we have come to expect in Egyptian five star hotels. These include private baths, air conditioning, a mini bar, hairdryers, safety deposit box, direct dial telephones, color satellite and cable TVs, Radio, Internet access and a private terrace or balcony. Rooms are relatively large, as well as comfortable.

There are a number of restaurants, including the Villa coffee Shop, Travelers with Pacific Rim specialties, La Pergola for Egyptian casual food, La Galeria, Tanamera roof top restaurant and the Dome Cafe.Bars include El Nino for afternoon drinks, Latino Bar, the Oasis which is a casual pool bar, an executive lounge and the Sunset Terrace roof observatory.

From a recreational standpoint, the hotel boasts the largest swimming pool in Cairo, along with tennis and squash courts.
