Farhad and the Shark
A hot wind blew across the sea, causing choppy little waves
along the surface of the water. Grains of beige sand blew up
from the beach into the air, and then dropped suddenly into the
water, sinking down to the bottom.
Farhad stuck his head out from between two rocks. The moray
eel gazed up topside, and noticed little whitecaps dancing about
on the surface. Before he left the safety of the rocks, he
looked around to make sure no sharks were swimming by. Satisfied
that he was safe, he swam out into the open sea. He loved the
feel of freedom and space and how the water felt as it glided
along his long, smooth body.
After just a few minutes he came upon a sunken ship. It was
broken into a few pieces. Farhad thought, "Hmmm. This ship
must have been sunk during one of the fierce storms up on
top." Curious, he swam into the broken hull. It was dark
inside, but he could still see everything clearly. Barnacles
were plastered to everything, their hard black shells coating
the rotting wood like icing on a cake. Several sponges grew from
the hull, their bright orange casings adding a bit of color to
the dullness of the wreck.
As Farhad swam past a large crack in the ship, out of the
corner of his eye he spotted a shark. "Oh no!" he
gurgled. "A shark! How will I get back to my rocks?"
he wondered. He swam closer to the wooden hole and peered out.
The huge gray shark was darting through the water, its tail
swishing back and forth to propel it. Its eyes were as black as
the oil. Farhad watched intently as the shark went by, and then
he slid back inside the hidden recesses of the sunken ship.
"What will I do?" he questioned himself. He swam
back over to the hole he’d come in through and looked at the
rocks where he usually hid. "Can I make it back to them
safely?" he wondered. He decided he would try. He stuck his
head out of the hole and was just about to swim back when the
shark came around to his side of the ship. Quickly Farhad pulled
himself back in and hid. The shark swam closer and closer to the
opening and Farhad was beginning to be very afraid. What if the
shark came inside? What if it was hungry? "Oh no!" he
cried out, sending little bubbles of air to the surface.
He peeked out again. The shark was nowhere to be seen, but
Farhad could see a lionfish off in the distance. It was swimming
along, unaware of the shark’s presence. Farhad watched in
terror as the shark came around to his side of the ship again
and headed for the lionfish. But, it swam right past it. It didn’t
eat it or even pay any notice to it. Soon the lionfish swam off.
Another fish came swimming by, very close to the sunken ship.
It was a butterfly fish. It was beautiful, bright yellow with
red spots on it. Farhad wondered if the shark would eat it, but
when it came swimming past, it went right by the fish, without
even a glance.
Seeing this, Farhad hoped that the shark wouldn’t bother
him if he tried to swim back to his rocks, so he slithered out
of the wreck as the shark went around to the other side of the
ship. He wiggled his body back and forth, going as quickly as he
could towards his pile of rocks. He was about half way there
when he felt a rippling of the water behind him. He turned
around and there was the huge shark, bearing down on him quickly
with his mouth wide open. "HELP!" Farhad screamed and
swam as fast as he could. The shark got closer and closer. In
fact it was so near that when Farhad turned to look at it, he
could see all the rows of sharp, jagged teeth in its mouth.
Terrified, he swam as fast as he could and made it to the safety
of the rocks just as the shark snapped its jaw down, catching a
piece of the rock in its teeth.
Farhad hid there, his heart beating rapidly with fear. He
breathed quickly thru his gills and watched as the shark swam
around and around his rock.
After a while he didn’t see the shark anymore, so he poked
his head out. The shark was gone. Farhad, the eel, was safe once
more. From then on, though, he stayed right near his pile of
rocks, deciding that he didn’t need to go exploring any
further than the few feet around him!

Red Sea Recipes
Snowflake Moray Eel Cookies
- ½ c. peanut butter
- ½ c. powdered milk
- ½ c. honey
- 1 T. cocoa
- ½ t. vanilla
- ½ c. nuts
- ½ c. raisins
Combine the peanut butter and powdered milk. Blend in rest of
ingredients. Divide into 2" balls. Roll each ball into an
eel shape. Using peanut butter as glue, add 2 miniature M&M’s
for eyes. Place on a waxed paper lined cookie sheet. Chill in
refrigerator until ready to eat your eels.
Eel Egg Omelet
Crack six eggs into a bowl, being careful not to get any
shell in it. Beat with a fork until yolk and white are fully
blended. Add about ¼ t. cardamom, ¼ t. coriander, salt and
pepper. Stir. Pour into a frying pan and let cook over low heat
until done. Serve inside pita bread. Top with a little olive oil
and cumin, and a squirt of lemon.
Sponge Surprise
- 2 ¼ c. flour
- ¾ c. sugar
- 1 T. baking soda
- ½ t. baking powder
- ¼ t. salt
- 2 t. ginger
- 1 t. cinnamon
- ½ t. cloves
- ¾ c. softened margarine
- ¾ c. water
- ½ c. molasses
Have your mother sterilize 5 Ball Quilted Crystal
#14400-81400 jam and jelly jars. Grease the inside of each with
shortening. Don’t use butter or spray cooking oil. Set aside.
In a bowl mix flour, sugar, soda, powder, salt, ginger,
cinnamon, and cloves. Stir in margarine, water and molasses.
Pour into jars equally.
Put the jars on a cookie sheet and bake in a preheated 325’
oven for 30-35 minutes. Do not over bake. When you take it right
out of the oven, place the lid and ring on the jar and allow it
to cool. Decorate the lids with pictures of fish and other sea
life. Give as gifts to your friends.
Sea Slugs
Melt the butter in a frying pan. Slice the two bananas (sea
slugs) in half lengthwise. Place them in the pan, flat side
down. Pour a strip of honey on the topside of each half. Cook
just one minute on each side.
Shipwreck Treasure
- One 6 ¾ oz. can ham, drained and flaked
- 1 t. instant minced onion
- 1 t. poppy seed
- 2 T. butter, softened
- 2 t. mustard
- One 10 oz. can refrigerator biscuits
- Five 4X4 Swiss cheese slices
Combine first 5 ingredients and set aside about 1/3 c.
Separate dough into ten biscuits. Press 5 biscuits into 3 one
half inch circles on ungreased cookie sheet. Spoon ¼ c. meat
mixture onto each flattened biscuit. Fold cheese slices into
quarters and press onto meat mixture. Spoon remaining meat
mixture over cheese. Press remaining 5 biscuits into 4"
circles and stretch over meat mixture. Do not seal edges.
Sprinkle tops with poppy seed. Bake 375’ for 10 to 15 minutes
or until golden brown. Enjoy your treasures.
Shark Pudding
- ¾ c. sugar
- 1 T. unflavored gelatin
- 1 ¼ c. lemon juice
- 1 T. grated lemon rind
- 2 egg whites
Mix together, gelatin, sugar, and water in saucepan. Stir
constantly and bring to boil. Blend in lemon juice and rind.
Place pan in cold water and cool until mixture mounds when
dropped from the spoon. Beat egg white till stiff. Slowly blend
gelatin mixture into beaten egg whites. After blending, spoon
into desert dishes and chill until firm.
Red Sea Rice
- 3 c. cooked rice
- ½ c. seedless raisins
- 2 ½ c. milk
- ½ c. honey
- 2 T. butter
- 1 t. grated lemon peel
- 1 T. lemon juice
Combine rice, raisins, milk, honey and butter in saucepan.
Stir in lemon peel and juice. Bring to boil, reduce heat, and
cook for 15 minutes, uncovered. Stir occasionally. Pour into
bowl and eat.
Under The Sea Casserole
- One 3/4lb. can shrimp, drained
- One 1/2lb. can crab, drained
- 1 c. mayonnaise
- 1 c. celery, chopped
- 1 onion, chopped
- 1 green pepper, chopped
- ½ c. toasted breadcrumbs
Mix shrimp, crab, mayo, celery, onion and green pepper. Place
in buttered casserole. Sprinkle breadcrumbs on top. Bake 350’
for ½ hour.
