Mosque of Qaybey (Kwawand Asla-Bey)

Located in the Fayyum, with a domed roof which rises on ancient columns (possibly from the pharaonic center of Kiman Faris), this mosque was probably built by its namesake, a Mameluke sultan around 1490. It was built in honor of the mother of his assassinated successor, Mohamed IV (1496-1498). Water from the Bahr Yusif once provided ablution through a well located inside the mosque, and there is a large minbar from Somalia with finely carved wood and inlaid ivory.
