Pope Tawadros II leads Christmas mass for the first time since the death of the late Pope Shenouda III.
Orthodox Copts gathered in the main Cathedral located in Abbasiya to celebrate Christmas eve. The mass was led by Pope Tawadros II, who was just elected last year after the sorrow death of Pope Shenouda III.
Pope Tawadros prayed for Egypt and President Morsi during the Christmas mass. “We pray for this beloved country... We love this country’s land and Nile and are proud that we are part of it," Pope Tawadros II said.
President Morsi did not attend the mass, but assigned Rifaa El-Tahtawi, the presidential chief of staff, on his behalf.
Other Public figures such as Islamic preacher and televangelist Amr Khaled, former presidential candidate Amr Moussa, and founder of the liberal Egypt Freedom Party, Amr Hamzawy, also attended the mass.
