In its issue of January 6, 1997 Travel Agent selected Dr. Mamdouh El- Beltagui, Minister of Tourism of Egypt, to be winner of the man of the Year 1996 for the Middle East. A triumph of Egyptian Tourism is highlighted by such a prestigious announcement.

In actual fact, the selection of Dr. El-Beltagui reflects the concrete achievements of the Egyptian Tourism industry that was able not only to recover from its crisis of 1993 but realize unprecedented figures. In 1996, the number of tourist rose to almost 4 million; the tourist nights, 24 million; and the tourist income more than 3 billion US dollars (the financial year 95/96).

According to Travel Agent, Dr. El-Beltaguis credit does not only rely on numbers and figures achieved in the tourist industry, but it is rather attributed to his style of thought and positive initiative that brought about a prosperous change in the Egyptian tourism industry.

Dr. El-Beltagui was the first to launch a professional marketing and advertising campaign in the most generating markets to Egypt, emphasizing various means of mass media. At the same time, his efforts has been constant in the field of tourism development, taking into consideration the protection of the environment, quality support and the indispensable joint cooperation between the public and the private sectors.

But to Travel Agent magazine, the selection of winners is not only limited to direct promoters of tourism. In 1995, the magazine selected the late Yizhak Rabin, Israels former Prime Minister, Man of the Year 1995 for the Middle East in recognition of his valuable focus on peace through tourism. In 1996, Travel Agent selected President Ernesto Zedillo Ponce de Leon of Mexico for Latin American for his constant support for nations tourism industry.
