Esna Lock will be closed during the following dates:

  • Sunset of June 1, 2000 until sunset of June 21, 2000

  • Sunset of December 1, 2000 until sunset of December 16, 2000

  • Sunset of June 1, 2001 until sunset of June 30, 2001

Esna Lock will otherwise operate on a 24-hour daily basis. Maintenance will take place every Monday and Wednesday from 9:00 am to 1:00 pm.

New Hotels

Four Seasons Hotel will open its first property in Giza, Egypt. The hotel will provide a unique five-star service. The hotel features 279 guestrooms and suites.

Howard Johnson Plaza will open officially this month. the American Hospitality Group will manage the hotel featuring 360 rooms.

New Sound and Light Shows in Abu Simbel

Three daily sound and light shows in seven different languages (Arabic, Russian, Japanese, English, French, Spanish, and German) will take place at the Great Temple of Abu Simbel effective April 1, 2000.

The schedule is as follows:

  • Apr. 1-27, 2000 - Shows at 7:00 pm, 8:00 pm, and 9:00 pm

  • Apr 28-Sept 28, 2000 - Shows at 8:00 pm, 9:00 pm, and 10:00 pm

Marinas and Docks in Upper Egypt

Prime Minister Atef Ebeid approved the allocation of US$6.8 billion to improve the present marinas in Upper Egypt in order to preserve the growing influx of Nile tourist boats and vessels. The present 120 marinas will be increased to 290 by the beginning of spring 2001 and the number of permits for floating hotels will be increased from 230 to 300.

Airport Update

  • Al Tor Airport is being renovated. Two hundred passengers per hour can be handled in the passenger terminal. A two-mile runway has been constructed.

  • Taba Airport's runway as well as the terminal are undergoing renovations.

  • Dahab Airport will be inaugurated by summer 2001 for easy access to all major spots to and from Dahab.

  • Aswan Airport is now ready to accommodate 4000 passengers per hour.

  • Hurghada Airport's capacity is 2000 passengers per hour.
