Bunefer was the wife of King Shepseskhaf, one of the more intriguing figures of the Fourth Dynasty. When he died, after a reign of only four years, his funeral ceremonies were conducted by Bunefer. Such a procedure was highly unusual, the funerary rites normally being performed by a son or other close male family member. From this circumstance, it might be presumed that the relationship between husband and wife was especially close.
