Who's Who of Egyptian people, queens and family: Meryre' I

Meryre' I

18th Dynasty

Meryre' I was the high priest of the god Aten during the reign of Akhenaten. Toward the end of Akhenaten's reign, he shared some of the priestly powers with others. Meryre' I was called the "Great Seer of Aten". He was in charge of the affairs of the temple at 'Amarna. Meryre's powers were destroyed when Akhenaten died and the capital at Thebes was removed by his successors. The Aten cult was replaced by the power of the god Amon. 'Amarna was abandoned and later destroyed by Horemhab, who was the last king of the 18th Dynasty. Meryre' and his wife, Tener, disappeared. He has a beautiful tomb at 'Amarna, but it was never finished.
