King Ramesses II made it a practice, especially in the early years of his reign, of appointing distinguished military or public servants to the various High Priesthoods which were in his gift. One such was the appointment of Bak, hitherto a Chief Charioteer of the Residence, as High Priest of Re in Heliopolis, one of the most prestigious and powerful pontificates in the Two Kingdoms.
